It is too easy to get wrapped up in keeping up with our fast paced world, and as a result of overstriving, healthy habits begin to fall to the wayside while we hold in our minds a preconcieved definition of success. It is to our own demise that we neglect to maintain good mental health. I made the graphic above to remind myself to carve out time to meditate,<sup data-fn=\"131b4c83-b965-4095-8197-e874fa16298b\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#131b4c83-b965-4095-8197-e874fa16298b\" id=\"131b4c83-b965-4095-8197-e874fa16298b-link\">1<\/a><\/sup> to enjoy the little things, to cultivate reverence and awe toward the world around me. Thus I am able enter back into my work refreshed and ready to continue striving for my goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today\u2019s post, and all my activities really, are an attempt to dwell somewhere in the middle of discipline (working to accomplish goals) and reverence (appreciating the subtle beauty of my reality). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am continually searching for ways to integrate a sustainable lifestyle into the hustle and bustle of modern living.<sup data-fn=\"bbc87b28-9720-4ad0-a07c-592b390c320a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#bbc87b28-9720-4ad0-a07c-592b390c320a\" id=\"bbc87b28-9720-4ad0-a07c-592b390c320a-link\">2<\/a><\/sup> I am looking for a way of living that neither rejects technology nor the fact that we need to work together with nature (which <em>includes<\/em> other human beings). There is a lot of work to be done on a large scale. There are also many choices we are faced with every day as individuals that can move us closer to our goals. By making considered choices as creators and consumers<sup data-fn=\"9d77e403-c131-4f2d-8a94-82a7bee1f338\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#9d77e403-c131-4f2d-8a94-82a7bee1f338\" id=\"9d77e403-c131-4f2d-8a94-82a7bee1f338-link\">3<\/a><\/sup>, we help to ensure the future we long for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of looking for a new paradigm entirely, I\u2019ve been looking for new strategies to apply to the current paradigm. I am asking myself what I can do to work toward a better future without overwhelming myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" src=\"https:\/\/kidcali.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Outofthebox_v2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kidcali.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Outofthebox_v2.jpg 900w, https:\/\/kidcali.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Outofthebox_v2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kidcali.co\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Outofthebox_v2-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve long held the belief that fiction indirectly influences our common reality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cImagining what drives other people \u2014 which feeds into our predictions \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/03\/29\/823438892\/what-its-like-for-doctors-on-the-front-lines-of-the-coronavirus-pandemic\">helps us see a situation from different perspectives<\/a>. It can even shift our core beliefs<\/em>\u2026<em>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/health-shots\/2020\/04\/11\/815573198\/how-stories-connect-and-persuade-us-unleashing-the-brain-power-of-narrative\">How Stories Connect And Persuade Us<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The narratives that we tell ourselves invariably impact the lives we build, and yet so many of these narratives simply <em>are not helping<\/em>. As much as I love stories of a dystopian nature, I think that humans are capable of steering ourselves away from the dismal future we are told is just around the corner. I\u2019m also focusing on being more optimistic (with a dash of realism).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Enter Solarpunk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201c\u2026we need solutions, not only warnings.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/www.re-des.org\/a-solarpunk-manifesto-all-the-languages\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.re-des.org\/a-solarpunk-manifesto-all-the-languages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ReDes: A Solarpunk Manifesto<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I was pleasantly surprised to find that there is a growing genre, just about a decade old, that asks all the questions I\u2019ve been asking myself for years. Questions based on various permutations of three words: <em>positive<\/em>, <em>realistic<\/em>, and <em>future<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although older works exist that fit into the genre, the word \u2018solarpunk\u2019 started popping up in blog posts and articles around 2008 and has been gradually increasing in mention since then. <a href=\"http:\/\/re-des.org\/a-solarpunk-manifesto-all-the-languages\/\">ReDes<\/a> did an excellent job of compiling a manifesto, and <a href=\"http:\/\/Solarpunk.net\">Solarpunk.net<\/a> has an awesome collection of <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/solarpunks\/solarpunk-a-reference-guide-8bcf18871965\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/solarpunks\/solarpunk-a-reference-guide-8bcf18871965\">references<\/a>, which I am sure I will be familiarizing myself with over the coming days and weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cOur future must involve repurposing and creating new things from what we already have\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/hieroglyph.asu.edu\/2014\/09\/solarpunk-notes-toward-a-manifesto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Solarpunk: Notes toward a manifesto \u2013 Project Hieroglyph<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>What I love about this genre is that it combines a sunlit aesthetic style with a DIY \/ Permaculture ethic. I am looking forward to diving deeper into what has already been created, and what else is to come. New mental models of what is possible can certainly help us to discover new ways of implementing infrastructure, and as Solarpunk gains more traction it is capable of shifting the narrative from one of doom and gloom to one of grit and possibility. It is \u201cWhat can we do?\u201d instead of \u201cOh my god, what have we done\/allowed to happen?\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>\u201cThere\u2019s an oppositional quality to solarpunk, but it\u2019s an opposition that begins with <\/em>infrastructure as a form of resistance<em>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/hieroglyph.asu.edu\/2014\/09\/solarpunk-notes-toward-a-manifesto\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Solarpunk: Notes toward a manifesto \u2013 Project Hieroglyph<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>While there are many crossovers, Solarpunk differs from Steampunk and Cyberpunk in an important way: it aims to offer realistic solutions for the problems at hand. Going beyond aesthetics, Solarpunk is anything but dystopian. It takes a bad situation and makes the best of it. It turns a junk heap into a wonderland, offering constructive ideas for a cooperative future. It offers a thought-provoking style of entertainment and I am all for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many ways, distopia is already here. Climate change, endless war and a growing divide between rich and poor are the tip of the melting iceberg. At the same time, we live in an incredible time and so much has <em>also<\/em> gotten better. The processors in our <em>phones<\/em> are more powerful than the technology that got us to the moon, and they give us near instant access to most of human knowledge!<sup data-fn=\"235d87e4-4790-408b-ba9f-3d2f3f183d67\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#235d87e4-4790-408b-ba9f-3d2f3f183d67\" id=\"235d87e4-4790-408b-ba9f-3d2f3f183d67-link\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We certainly have the tools for building a positive future.  What we are unable to build in reality, we can (and should) beta test in a fictional setting. Let\u2019s get to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>P.S.
