here and there

musings of a wandering mind

BT Carbon

Sometimes, during my free time, I want to do all the things, all at the same time. Depending on the state of my executive functioning skills, I might read a book, or clean the house, or get lost in a wikipedia rabbithole, or doomscroll (though I’m getting better about not doing that), or watch a movie.

Or, maybe, I’ll do something creative.

Lately, I’ve been making quick hand drawn fonts in this iPad app called Fontself. This is a font I call BT Carbon, it’s based on an old typeface called Bulletin Typewriter (hence ‘BT’) that I found in an old Letraset handbook.

BT Carbon is fast and imperfect, which I think works well and makes it look even more like a typewriter because of its inconsistencies. Some letters look oversaturated in ink, others less so. I’m thinking I might make a bunch of alternates for each letter and figure out how to randomize them so there’s some variation in the glyphs. From what I can tell it should be doable.

As a creative person in the modern world it can be easy to get lost in the data overwhelm which only seems to be exponentially increasing. I mean how many shows are there on Netflix alone? That being said, I think all humans are creative beings, and there is a lot of satisfaction that comes with making something yourself, even when it might be a lot easier to have it generated by AI. It’s definitely a lot easier to just not do it. But honestly, I don’t know where I would be without my creative habits, I feel like they keep me sane. Although sometimes I have some weird urge to create something massive, sometimes the best thing I can do in the current moment is to just find inspiration in the small things. It is very gratifying to even make something simple.

Anyway I hope this inspires you to make something soon!
