musings of a wandering mind

The Kid Calico Blog, as an entity of its own, is hungry for knowledge and understanding

I keep putting off starting my blog in earnest. The perfectionist in me wants to start at the beginning, but to find the beginning has thus far in my life been a futile attempt.

The beginning of anything at all, when you really get down to it, is impossibly difficult to find. So this blog, as with everything else (as far as I know) may never really have a beginning. I am coming to terms with that as a likely probability, so excuse me for starting in the middle.

Drawing of night sky with two speech bubbles coming from either side: "Did you find the beginning yet?" "Nope."

Hi there!

I’m Ryan, and I’m at a bit of a crossroads in life. So, I’m going to talk a bit about my background and a bit of what I’d like to see in the future.

I am a designer, a writer, and a self-proclaimed artist (sans medium) with a background in yoga, cognitive science, visual arts, education, and travel as a state of mind. More on that later.

I am a really big fan of vegetables, and also a hobby collector.

You might categorize me as a Peter Pan type of guy, who doesn’t want to grow up, and I guess if you did, you’d be right in some ways. Again and again, I’ve given up the comfort of stagnant stability for the promise of a new horizon, straying away from the familiar for a glimpse of expansion. Sure, sometimes I get carried away but I am a committed student of life and any day I don’t grow or learn in some small way is… let’s just say I try not to let that happen.

I’m starting this blog to capture and share my whimsy with the world, in the hope that I might be able to share a glimpse of the things that spark my mind and bring me joy during this experience called life. Which I am very grateful for, and lucky to lead.

I’m building this blog as a place to talk about my favorite things: how to make the world a better place, using art and design to facilitate an educated and compassionate population, where progress is praised over achievement, and where people live out their dreams. I know that if it’s possible for some of us to live our dreams, it’s definitely also possible for every person as long as every person is given the right opportunities, along with the time and space to have dreams.

I’m here to explore the possibilities of a science-embracing society, which values the earth for the lives on it rather than the resources it contains. I’m wondering how to achieve a new scope of community engagement in a world where, if we’re not careful, we’ll all be living in our own bubbles on the ocean floor. Sounds lonely.

The future I am envisioning is very green and has lots of animals, and everybody is completely sick of violence and hatred (why the hell isn’t that one true already). I didn’t say it was going to be easy. I’m also not trying to lead anyone, but rather to open a future-forward dialogue, where we can keep our favorite technologies but also improve our relationship with our shared spaceship/mother/pachamama: planet Earth.

On Kid Calico, I’ll be covering whatever I’ve become immersed in and why I believe it is important. Anything from philosophy to music to film/television to neuroscience to permaculture to design theory. It’s an art/science/culture blog that is single-minded about what fits in and what doesn’t.

Probably because, for now at least, it will be written by a single mind.

What does fit: interesting and constructive mind-expanding deliciousness, spanning the seven gazillion realms of art and science.

What doesn’t fit: negativity, fear, small-mindedness.

Anyway, welcome to my world. I love you. 🫶🏼🌎🌍🌏
